Date: Sunday, June 10, 2001 UpdateGood Morning ladies and gentlemen, welcome to River Heritage Days second day of racing on the Ohio River. We will bringing you live inboard racing action via web casting, on what has turned out to be: a perfect weekend of racing. The river is a little more active by way of current today, and a cool, steady breeze fills this sun filled valley. We are getting set for more "Thunder on the Ohio" as boat motors are now being fired in the pit stalls. Stay tuned for live coverage, as racing will get started soon. Until them, I'm Ryan Driscoll along with announcer Bill Nettles.....saying buckle-up and hold on! Date: Sunday, June 10, 2001 UpdatePre-race activities are now getting under way. Today's web coverage has been made possible by Ray Downes and David Coes. A special thanks goes out to these two gentlemen. Region 4 APBA racing will never be the same...and for that matter, maybe all APBA class racing, in the near future, will reach those on the world wide web. Well, Rescue teams are now taking their positions on the water, and all marker pins and buoys are in their designated spots to make up this one mile course. Date: Sunday, June 10, 2001 UpdateWell, both the American National Anthem and the Canadian National Anthems have been played signaling that "We are ready to go racing." We are getting started with GNH and National Modifieds. Date: Sunday, June 10, 2001 UpdateThe five minute warm -up gun has been fired, and taking to the field are... 1). #183 Randy Hurst in the Nemesis 2). #911 Jim Soward in Liquid Assault 3). #6 Mary Wolfe in Summer Wine 4). #317 Steve Kohr in The Irishman--- National Modified 5). #83 Tony Stalder in the Blue Mule--- National Modified And we have a good start, and Steve Kohr leads the field for lap one. The battle on the course is for the second position, where Tony Stalder and Marty Wolf are battling it out. But as lap four unfolds, we find that our leader is getting challenged by The Blue Mule. As the checkered flag waves, Steve Kohr in the Irishman will hold off Tony Stalder in the Blue Mule for the win. Finishing third will be Marty Wolfe in Summer Wine. Fourth will be Randy Hurst in Nemesis, and finally, we will have Tim Soward in Liquid Assault. Date: Sunday, June 10, 2001 UpdateOur next qualifying heat will be the 1.5 litre stock division. In this class we will have... 1). #1 George Kennedy in the Outlaw. 2). #14 Tim Struzek in Hijacker. 3). #71 Stuart Shane in Hijacker II. 4). #25 Bobby Kennedy in Lil Shameless. 5). #5 James Wilson in Star Trooper ---a 2.5 stock division participant getting some seat time. We will not have Ken McMullen in the #5 Hostile Takeover joining us due to mechanical damage incurred yesterday. Get ready for T-class racing at its best! Date: Sunday, June 10, 2001 UpdateThe one minute gun has sounded for the T boats ( 1.5 litre stock division ), and we are set to go racing. Coming down for the start, we have Tim Struzek leading Bobby Kennedy and George Kennedy. On lap two, George Kennedy passes Bobby to take second place. Meanwhile, we have Stuart Shane dead in the water in Hijacker II. On lap three, Bobby passes George for their third swap. But up front it is all Tim Stuzek in the Hijacker. George Kennedy in Outlaw holds on to second while Bobby Kennedy in Lil Shameless grabs third. James Wilson, meanwhile, goes a lap down in Star Trooper. On the final lap, we yet again have another pass...Bobby Kennedy in Lil Shameless will grab second and hold it to the finish behind your winner Tim Struzek in Hijacker. Third place will go to George Kennedy in Outlaw. At the conclusion, we appear to have three sick boats. The #5 Star Trooper will get a tow in, and Tim Struzek limps in. Stuart Shane never even started in the Hijacker II. Date: Sunday, June 10, 2001 UpdateOur next qualifying heat will have the 1.5 litre modifieds. A unique aray of engines encompasses this field...anything from a modified Yamaha Jet Ski engine to a modified Toyota. In this field we will have... 1). #23 Alicia Cheezum in Wanna Bee. 2). #25 David Archiable in My Miss Triss. 3). #26 Joe Cheezum in Miss Zandy. 4). #37 William McCowan in Sonic Speed. 5). #41 Scott Liddycoat in the KT Special. 6). #54 Valerie Liddycoat in the Pink Panther II We have the Wanna Bee sick and the Pink Panther II sick from the get go. They still have time before the one minute gun fires though! Date: Sunday, June 10, 2001 UpdateAs the one minute gun fires for this 1.5 modified division, we find that Valerie has been substituted by Kenny McMullen in the Pink Panther. He will line himself up in fourth. And we have a good start, where My Miss Triss leads the first lap. But here comes Scott Liddycoat and Joe Cheezum fast. So fast in fact, Joe Cheezum has everybody covered by lap two. Not for long, My Miss Triss, driven by David Archiable, wants some more of Cheezum. On lap three, McMullen passes Scott for third. As they come down to lap four Joe Cheezum is back in first place in Miss Sandy, but here comes the Pink Panther and Miss Triss back. They are three wide in turn four in a dead heat. As they cross the line, Joe gets it, followed by David Archiable and Ken McMullen. Fourth will go to Scott Liddycoat, and fifth will go to #37 William McCowan in Sonic Speed. Date: Sunday, June 10, 2001 UpdateNow get ready for the T boat final. This is a return for the 1.5 stock drivers. Tim Struzek hopes he can have a repeater here. The one minute gun has sounded, and it looks like George Kennedy will have inside dibs for lane choice. As they approach the start line, George and Bobby Kennedy will lead both Hijackers. As lap three unfolds, George Kennedy develops a commanding lead over Bobby Kennedy. Robin Shane now drives the Hijacker II, which runs in third. Finally, Tim Struzek finishes up the running order. As the final lap unfolds, we have Robin Shane side by side with Bobby Kennedy's Lil Shameless. As they come down to take the checker, The Outlaw, manned by George Kennedy will win. Second will be Robin Shane, third will be Bobby Kennedy, fourth will be Tim Struzek. Date: Sunday, June 10, 2001 UpdateThe 1.5 litre mod final will have #26, Miss Zandy, driven by Keith McMullen as the winner. Second will have #54, Pink Panther II, driven by Kenny McMullen. Third place goes to #25, My Miss Triss, David Archiable. Fourth goes to #37, William McCowan in Sonic Speed. Fifth place goes to #41, Scott Liddycoat, in the KT Special. And we did not see Alicia Cheezum in that final in the #23 Wanna Bee. ****As a note, in the 1.5 stock division final, Bobby Kennedy will be finalized one finishing spot due to a lane change violation, which effected Tim Struzek's performance. Date: Sunday, June 10, 2001 UpdateWe now must take a short pause for river barge traffic. All the live action will return as soon as the river is cleared....Stay tuned for more "Thunder on the Ohio." Date: Sunday, June 10, 2001 UpdateNow its time for the first qualifier for the 2.5 litre boats. #2, Superior Miss, driven by Douglas Carnahan will run. As the race starts, #57, Scott Liddycoat leads the way. He dominates followed by Dan Walls in Almost Heaven. The race final will reflect their running order! #44, will get third. #2 will get fourth. And on a sad note, #4, You Go Girl, driven by Beth Gilday did not start after an impressive run here yesterday. Date: Sunday, June 10, 2001 UpdateNow get ready for the second heat of qualifying for the 2.5 litre division. In this field we will have... 1). #711, One More Time, driven by Alan Busch. 2). #98, Team Extreme, driven by Shawn Cassidy. 3). #19, Claim Jumper, driven by Clarence Pfaff. 4). #107, Hydro Freak II, driven by Rich Newman. 5). #96, W.D. James Wilson, in the #15, will now run in this group to get some needed seat time. As the one minute gun fires, we find Mr. Wilson limping along the front stretch. Will he get it going? As they come down for the start, #711 , 67, and 19 take suit. Clarence Pfaff in Claim Jumper means business as he jumps out to an impressive lead. However, by lap two we have #711, Alan Busch, in One More Time at his skid plate. As they cross the line, Alan will take control of the lead. In third place, we have #67, Joe Kreitzer,in Impossible Dream. On lap three, #107, retires to the pits. That is Rich Newman. As the one minute gun fires, #711 and #67 hold both inside positions. Before the race starts, it appears that Wayne Dunlap and Clarence Pfaff are having boat problems. But all are under way at the start. As the start gun fires, Scott Liddycoat goes "airborne" and leads the way. #67 follows in second followed by #44 in third. They will run this way to the finish. Coming in fourth is #96, fifth will be #711, and sixth place is #19, seventh place is #98, and finally #2. Date: Sunday, June 10, 2001 UpdateThe Jersey Speed Skiff final has been completed, and JS-41, the Thunder Thud, driven by Tom Thompson dominates the race. Finishing in the second position is JS-67, Bruce Plaskett, in What a Rush. Third goes to JS-45, The Menace, driven by Dennis Macy. Fourth goes to Js-111, Still Crazy, driven by Charles Andersen. Keep in mind this is only a qualifier, a race where everyone will return in the final. Was anybody holding back? Date: Sunday, June 10, 2001 UpdateGet set for 5.o litre action. This is a one race event...for all the marbles. Unfortunately, we do not have the required four boat field for APBA points. But in the line-up we have Andrew Keoch in Hydro Tech V, #e-12. Also in the field is the number e-89, Miss Sandy, driven by Lee Gore. Finally, we have e-816, Batt, driven by Charles Miller, Jr. Prior to the firing of the one minute gun, it seems that e-816 has engine problems. As the one minute gun fires, Andy Keoch is poised in Hydro Tech 5, and hammers it down for the start. But Miss Sandy is right there to answer. And where did Charles Miller Jr. come from? We have three boats in contention. At the conclusion of lap one, we have #12, followed by #816, followed by #89. Lap three sees the same, but Charles Miller Jr. is right there to challenge......gets around Keoch on the backstretch and takes the lead. Miller looks at the white flag, but Keoch sees it too. What we have on the final lap is a true shoot-out. But Miller is going to hold on to it. In fact, Gore almost passes Keoch for second at the finish line. What a race! Date: Sunday, June 10, 2001 UpdateNow we get set for the Jersey Speed Skiff final. Stand by as we get set to fire the five minute gun! Date: Sunday, June 10, 2001 UpdateThe five minute gun fires, and the speed skiffs are off and warming up. Date: Sunday, June 10, 2001 UpdateWe have firing of the one minute gun, and Dennis Macy hangs back once again, pacing himself for the start. On the inside we have Thunder Thud...but JS 67 takes the start. On the back stretch of lap one, Thunder Thud returns to challenge What a Rush. Dennis Macy runs in third, with JS 111 bringing up the rear. On lap three, Thunder Thud stretches out his lead. As they come down to the finish, Bruce Plaskett gets wild out of turn four, as he makes What a Rush justify its name. He tries to catch Thunder Thud, but in vain. As the checker flies, we have #41, #67, followed by #45, then #111. Date: Sunday, June 10, 2001 UpdateWell, we get set for our final event of the evening. We have the GNH/National Mod final. Date: Sunday, June 10, 2001 UpdateThis is it!!!! The biggest and loudest. The five minute gun has sounded. Taking to the water is #183, Randy Hurst, in Nemesis, #911, Jim Soward, in Liquid Assault, #317, Steve Kohr, in The Irishman, #83, Tony Stalder, in the Blue Mule, and finally, #6, Marty Wolfe, in Summer Wine. The one minute gun fires, and it appears that Summer Wine wants that inside position. They come down to what appears to be a good start. Summer Wine is challenged by the Irishman....who just takes a wrong turn on turn four to go off the course. This brings up Nemesis and 911. 83 struggles on the front stretch. But up front, its all Summer Wine. His only challenge, the Irishman, sits idle off of turn four. On the last lap, the Blue Mule sounds sick. As the checkered flag waves, your winner will be #6, Marty Wolfe, in Summer Wine. Randy Hurst, in Nemesis, gets second. What an exciting finish. Date: Sunday, June 10, 2001 UpdateWell, that concludes a fantastic evening of racing on the Ohio. The bad weather, scheduled to move in tonight, held off. Once again, we thank all of those who joined us for this event. "Thunder on the Ohio", live on the internet would not have been made possible without the help of David Coes, Ray Downes, and the many of assistants here at New Martinsville, West Virginia. For all those who followed this live broadcast...Thank You! Until next time, this is Ryan Driscoll with announcer Bill Nettles saying goodnight!
